“THE FIRST COMPLETE NUCLEAR MEDICINE SERVICES TO SERVE VISAYAS AND MINDANAO SINCE 1990”

Nuclear Medicine

Providing easy and safe detection of certain diseases.

As the first nuclear medicine service to serve Visayas and Mindanao, we use the most advanced Gamma Camera Machine in a full-service nuclear department that performs diagnostic, therapeutic and research application procedures.

The Nuclear Medicine of Cebu Doctors' University Hospital marks 20 years of continuous commitment to full service and devote a quality care highlighting its passion for innovative technology and expertise. It is the "First to Serve the Visayas and Mindanao" since 1990.

The Nuclear Medicine Services Department was blessed on December 7, 1990 and officially started on December 8, 1990.

 WHAT IS NUCLEAR MEDICINE?

Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty that uses very small amounts of radioactive substances or radiopharmaceuticals (tracers) to diagnose or treat diseases. It is devoted to diagnostic, therapeutic and research applications of internally administered radionuclide.

 WHAT'S NEW?

The Nuclear Medicine Services bring in the "MYOCARDIAL PERFUSION IMAGING." It is a diagnostic exam that evaluates the blood flow to your heart and how well the heart is able to pump blood. This test detects narrowing of the coronary arteries and estimates the strength of your heart muscle.

THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES

  • Iodine 131 Therapy is a treatment for an overactive thyroid, acondtion called hyperthyroidism.
    • For thyroid arcinomas
    • For toxic Goiter
  • Yttrium 90 radiosynovectomy Radiosynovectomy is a procedure using a radioactive product (Yttrium-90) to treat inflamed knee joints, for example rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory osteo-arthritis.
  • Samarium 153 is a radioactive substances used in the treatment of bone cancer and bone metastases (cancers that have spread from the original tumor to the bone). Samarium 153 is a radioactive form of the element samarium. It collects in bone, where it releases radiation that may kill cancer cells. It is a type of radioisotope.
    • For bone palliation

SCINTIMAMMOGRAPHY

It is a type of breast imaging test that is used to detect cancer cells in the breasts of some women who have had abnormal mammograms, or who have dense breast tissue.

CARBON - 14 UREA BREATH TEST

This test provides non-invasive means of diagnosing a stomach infection with bacteria called helicobacter pylori. These bacteria have been linked to the formation of ulcers in the stomach and small intestines.

FAQ

A doctor/technologist will insert an IV and ECG leads will be attached to your chest. A stress test is performed using a treadmill or with a pharmacologic medicine with the presence a cardiologist. At peak stress, a radiopharmaceutical will be injected through your IV. After a waiting time of 45-60 minutes, a set of "stress" images of your heart will be taken using the SPECT Gamma camera. This will last about 20 minutes. A waiting time of 2 to 3 hours is required before injecting another set of "rest images" will be taken. The whole procedure will take about 4-5 hours.

The test will be performed using pharmacologic agents like dipyridamole, adenosine or dobutamine.

  • Nuclear Medicine procedures include administration of LOW DOSE radioactive material.
  • Though it is radioactive, it has no reported harmful effects to the patient.
  • You are advised not to get near pregnant women and children 6 hours from the time of your radioactive tracer injection for scan.
  • Drinking plenty of water is highly encouraged since the administered radioactive material can be eliminated from the system thru urine.
  • Please bring your doctor's request.
  • Kindly bring diagnostic results that are related to the test such as blood tests, ECG, 2D Echo, Treadmill Test & previous MPI.
  • Result will be available 24 hours after procedure is done.
  • You may claim or we can forward the result to your doctor's clinic (MAB 1 and 2, Borromeo Bldg and Diaz Bldg only) and let your doctor explain to you.
  • Feel free to call Nuclear Medicine Department for more information.
